Throughout our lives, we read many books. Some we read for pure obligation, but some we actually read for our enjoyment, and many times, these choices become memorable from the pure entertainment we had reading these books, having impacts and influences that last through our entire lives.

I experienced this moment, too. This occurred with a globally recognized book: Diary of a Wimpy Kid. This book was not only entertaining but also relatable and humorous in a way that made reading feel effortless and genuinely enjoyable. It stood out from many other books I had read because it did not feel like a task, but rather something I looked forward to continuing.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a book written by Jeff Kinney that narrates the story of Greg Heffley, a middle-school kid going through the hardships of being young. In diary form, the plot revolves around simple text coupled with cartoon drawings to create something both attractive and readable. This makes the book ideal for young kids who don’t feel that much attracted to books or those individuals who do not have patience for lengthy books. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid at first appears to be just another book about funny events; however, as one reads deeper into it, they find it full of relatable events that make the experience more unique and personal.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book is its relatability. Greg faces common challenges such as friendships, school, and family dynamics. These are situations that almost everyone experiences at some point in their lives, especially during their adolescence. For example, his relationship with his best friend, Rowley, underscores how misunderstandings and jealousy can affect friendships. While Greg often makes questionable choices, his flaws are what make him feel real. Readers may not always agree with his actions, but they can understand his perspective and possibly recognize similar thoughts or behaviors in themselves.

Another important element of the book, moreover, is its humor. Jeff Kinney also applies clever writing and expressive drawings throughout the story to create humorous parts. The humor ranges from little everyday situations to exaggerated happenings that make the reader laugh out loud. This kind of humor makes the book fun and keeps the reader interested all the way through the book. The illustrations are key as they make the scenes clearer and give them personality without having to explain in a lot of words. This adds to the vibrancy and recollection of the reading experience.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid also offers subtle lessons about growing up and taking responsibility. Greg’s experiences often illustrate the consequences of selfishness, dishonesty, or a lack of empathy. He does not always learn from his mistakes right away, but readers can see the impact of his actions on those around him. The lessons are not presented in a rigid or moralizing way, which makes them more natural and easier to absorb. Instead of telling readers what is right and wrong, the book allows readers to draw their own conclusions based on Greg’s experiences.

Additionally, one element that also contributes greatly to the success of the book is its format. Because the book is a diary, the reader feels they are with Greg and experiencing his thoughts and emotions. This adds a level of personal connection and engagement with the book that you might have if you were reading a friend’s personal journal. Reading the book can encourage anyone to create their own diaries or write similarly to how Greg writes. Also, the way the book is written in very simple language allows all different types of readers to enjoy the story.

I believe that the reason this series has become so popular is that it can appeal to many people from different age ranges. The series is primarily directed towards young readers; however, older readers also tend to find enjoyment in reading these types of books because they can relate to the humorous, nostalgic way in which Greg portrays school life in his stories. The awkwardness or embarrassment that Greg goes through on both a personal and family level, as well as how he struggles in social events, are situations that have been experienced by all people at some point, and are ultimately funny to read about. Because of this large audience appeal, the book series has become an extremely successful series that is well known and read all over the world.

On a more personal side, my journey with this book began slightly before the pandemic, when I kept running out of things to do, so I decided to start reading this book, as it always sat in the same spot in my room. At the beginning of the first book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I already fell in love with it. The humorous writing style and illustrations captivated my attention, driving me to eventually purchase the whole initial 5-book series and read them whenever I could. Then, before I noticed, I had purchased 4 additional books and already started to read them, even during the online classes. This, undoubtedly, solidified my love and interest in this style of books.

The success of this book can also be seen in the multiple adaptations to the cinema. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has received many different adaptations, ranging from movies created in 2011 by Disney to an animation in 2022. These adaptations are generally received positively by the audience, referring to them as funny and faithful. In general, these movies are especially memorable to the audience, as they can visualize in real-life scenarios their favorite scenes/moments in the book.

To conclude, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is not simply another children’s book; it is a story that illustrates the awkwardness, confusion, and fun of growing up. The book is very relatable to young readers through its characters and layout. It has also provided plenty of entertainment for young and older audiences alike. This will stick with me throughout the span of my lifetime because reading this book demonstrated to me that books can be both entertaining and have meaning.
