At EAC, the staff and teachers have always wanted to join both the American and the Brazilian cultures, and show the students the best of both worlds. One of their attempts at increasing the visibility of the positive aspects of Brazilian culture was the “Semana da Cultura Brasileira”.

We spoke to Ester, the Director of the Brazilian curriculum, who explained to us a little more about the intentions behind this tradition. She explained that it started as a small project about 10 years ago. They created some activities in class and tried to involve more and more aspects of Brazil. They wanted to present the great things about our culture, not only the bad things happening.

She mentioned that prior to the pandemic, as many students may remember, the staff was able to work on a large campaign; including donations, games, competitions, projects, and lessons, all surrounding the theme of Brazilian culture. Up until the pandemic, we had been taking part in fun and educative activities, but because of the pandemic, these activities have had to be put on hold.

The writing competition, also known as “Concurso Literário”, is one of the main activities. It has been happening every year during the Semana da Cultura Brasileira, starting around 6 years ago. This year’s contest has just ended, the results coming out later this week (February 21st).

The “Semana da Cultura Brasileira” has been able to bring awareness about the beauty of the culture in Brazil. Different activities and special guests brought the EAC community together, even being apart from each other during the difficult times of COVID-19. This week is essential to stop assumptions about Brazil that obviously have a bad side, but also the positive aspects that are not shown as often to the society.
