Around the world, through many cultures, pets have been immensely cherished, being more than loyal companions and offering more than memorable moments. And now, in recent years, searches and psychologists have pointed out that pets not only impact cherishable moments, but also a significant role in mental health. From easing the loneliness feeling to helping with coping with stress, our furry companions provide beneficial emotional support for various people.

One of the most common benefits of having a pet is its their ability to significantly reduce anxiety and stress. Studies of the Humane Society of Greater Niagara have shown that 69% of the people who own pets have claimed that their pets have helped them in reducing their levels of anxiety as well as stress. Studies also have shown that being able to interact with animals, even if its just petting a dog or cat, can lower the levels of cortisol, which is the hormone linked to stress, and increase the levels of oxytocin, the hormone linked to relaxation. Having a pet can be extremely beneficial for people who struggle with their high-stress lifestyle and anxiety disorders.

Pets also play a significant role in relieving their owners feeling of loneliness and combating depression. Other than providing unconditional and companionship, having a pet can also provide their owners a sense of belonging and purpose. For example, coming home to seeing your dogs excitement to see you gives off a sense of welcoming and content. Many studies have shown that caring for a pet increases daily activities as well as routines, such as grooming, feeding, and executing exercises, wether it be daily walks or playing fetch. This is immensely beneficial for those struggling with sense of loneliness because it can provide the owner with a reason to get up each morning and develop healthy habits. Additionally, in special cases, therapy dogs are specifically trained to provide their owners with mental health treatment, supporting their sufferings of PTSD, grief, or depression.

Undeniably, pets are far more then companions. They are supporters who silently provide aid to our emotional and mental well-being. Through their relaxing presence, the routines they require, and their unconditional affection, pets, without flaws, can ease their owners feelings of depression and loneliness, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote a healthier lifestyle and a positive mindset. As many awarenesses for mental health increase, the role of pets in supporting their owners emotional state should not be underestimated. Caring for our pets helps us care for ourselves as well.
