Read, Explore, Evolve: Charting the Progress of School Library Transformations

How many hours do you spend in the school library? A library is a comfortable place where you read books, study, share ideas, and build up your knowledge. The pathway towards the current library was sophisticated but worthy enough to improve the school environment.

Interview with Lucia Ferreira

Changes that the library went through

Lucia worked in the library for about 24 years, spending most of her daily life in our school library. We asked about the picture above as it seems like our library went through some changes. She told us that it is the library in the same building but the difference is that we use the space more efficiently nowadays.

In the past, there were two classrooms and one office inside the library and it was full of steel shelves. With the renovation, they put away the handy wall, making more space and they also changed the high shelves into low shelves.

With those changes, they put more desks and sofas for students so that they can stay in the library comfortably. EAC library bought a lot of new books for students, as well.

Special events

There are specific months that our library celebrates, such as Heritage Month, Black History, and Asian Pacific. Whenever there are special events like Halloween and Thanksgiving, they put decorations and special books. They also have a book fair during the Semana Brasileira, bringing new books, and having a storyteller and an author visit. Lucia wants more people to be engaged in these special events to integrate our community.

Things that Lucia wants to change

She told us that it was her wish to build at least one more floor in the library so that upper school students could be on the upper floor. She would like to have an open space with glasses on the second floor like a veranda with tables and chairs, allowing students to chat with their friends and talk freely during lunch or break times. She also told us that making the upper school library upstairs would be a great idea as preschool kids often need to have classes separately.

Also, she wants to make a separate reading room with cousins, pillows, and steps. This can allow students to sit and listen to the story in a comfortable position.

To conclude, the school library has undergone remarkable transformations over the years, evolving into a vibrant space that not only provides academic needs but also fosters a sense of community through engaging events.

As Lucia envisions further enhancements, the library will go through continuous transformations toward creating an inspiring space for all students.
