by Sofia Sasse and Susana Groot

Ninth-grade students this year will travel to Cananeia, SP, leaving on the 20th of September at 6:30 a.m. It has been recommended by the traveling agency that they take 2 pairs of tennis shoes and an extra pair of pants (not including jeans) that can get wet. By 12:30 p.m. the students will have arrived and will check into the Hotel Golfinho Plaza where they will also have lunch. Their first activity of the trip will be in the historical center of Cananeia, and through the use of their cell phones they will carry out activities. After getting ready at the hotel, the class will have a delicious all-you-can-eat pizza dinner and be presented with a cultural festive tradition, the Fandango. The Fandango is original to the Caiçaras of the region.

On the next day, the freshman will take an exclusive boat ride to the Ilha de Cardoso, they must be wearing pants (not jeans), tennis shoes, a t-shirt, and swimwear underneath, keep in mind that all of these clothes should be proper to get wet and dirty! In a bag also take a change of clothes, water, flip-flops, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and a towel.

During their trip, they will learn more about the culture of the caiçaras and about the biome diversity surrounding the area. This includes biomes like the restinga, Mata Atlântica, manguezal, and the costão rochoso. They will also learn about artisanal fishing, a large part of the culture of the area.

During the periods of free time, the students will have full opportunities to go swimming in the pool and the ocean, play sports on the beach, and a luau on the second day.

On the last day of the trip, they will go on another excursion to Ilha Comprida, where they will go on a hiking trail and visit a sambaqui. These are archaeological sites left by prehistoric peoples who inhabited the Brazilian coast 7 to 8 thousand years ago, long before the Tupi-Guaranis. They will also do other activities on the beach and receive snacks throughout the day. To bring an end to their field trip, students will leave Cananeia at 15:00 p.m. and arrive at the EAC campus by 21:00 p.m.
