The future of AI

Some believe that AI will dominate the world, but is that really what the future awaits for us? In class, we watched two works on artificial intelligence; however, although both works have a similar central idea, both have a vision of a future of utopia, and dystopia. The film “Her”, by director Spike Jonze, has an utopian approach to the subject. The main character, Theodore, begins to get romantically involved with an AI, Samantha, and even though they don’t have a physical body, the couple manages to develop, but as the plot evolves, Theodore discovers that Samantha is simultaneously relating to hundreds of users. On the contrary, the film “Second Renaissance”, directed by Mahiro Maeda tells the story of how AI will start serving humans, but as time goes by, a war will make the situation reverse and robots will enslave humans to energy. The two texts contrast in the prosperous future that artificial intelligence can bring us or in the apocalyptic future that we will reach if we follow this path.

As AIs such as Chat GPT and Google Bard develop and become more accessible to the wide public, the futuristic AI doesn’t seem all that far from our reality. But the uncertainty remains on how it will impact our future. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, calls for a stop in the rapid AI development, as it could oppose a real threat to humanity. Elon went as far as signing an open letter on stopping the development of AI. As not even the creators of these AIs can’t control the outcome of artificial intelligence. But what does our community think of the future of AI?
