Bella Hadid’s revolutionary liquid dress and how it was made

Bella Hadid had one of the most famous catwalk appearances this week at the Coperni fashion show during Paris Fashion Week 2022. Her dress wasn’t ready until the middle of the show when audience members got to see the dress being made in front of their very own eyes using a mysterious spray. They watched as technicians surrounded Hadid and sprayed a material onto her body in the form of a dress. After some careful adjustment, she went down the runway in an attire that was difficult to tell had been created at the moment.

The great idea to mix fashion and contemporary technology to create history at this year’s Paris Fashion Week came from the creators of the Coperni fashion industry. This marks the first time in fashion show history that this type of idea has been used. Manel Torres, the creator of the spray-on fabric, and the other experts surrounded Hadid as the fashion show was held in the Salle des Textiles at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris. She was standing on the runway in nothing but her lingerie and high heels when specialists started snow-spraying her.

Bella Hadid’s gown was made of Fabrican, a proprietary spray-on substance that solidifies into wearable fabric, according to the fashion house’s designers. The designer’s assistant dropped the shoulders, cut the hem with scissors, and tore the right leg. Then, the model strutted down the catwalk wearing a stunning, fitting white outfit that was once a liquid.

Designer Arnaud Vaillant gave a statement to Vogue in which he said: “We wanted to dedicate this moment to Dr. Torres, because we respect what he does so much. We felt that it was absolutely necessary that he lead the performance—to us, that makes the experience even more magical.” After studying fashion design at the Royal College of Art in London, Torres created the patented technology, which immediately dries on collision with any surface, including liquids, to create a non-woven fabric layer. He hopes to use this technology to introduce fresh, new ideas to the fashion industry.

Regarding the dress, Coperni stated: “It can be used to make innovative clothes that can be washed, re-worn, and even integrated with diagnostic devices that can monitor the health of the wearer. The technology consists of short fibers bound together with polymers and biopolymers, and greener solvents that deliver the fabric in liquid form, then evaporate when the spray reaches a surface.”

Fabrican, which was established in 2003, is investigating the applications of its innovations in the domains of clothes, healthcare, automobiles, packaging, and building items. Robots, 3D printers, industrial sprayers, and aerosol technology can all be used to apply the spray-on fabric. Hadid was the sole model taken into consideration for the performance, according to the fashion house’s designers, because of her connection to technology. She recently distributed 11,111 virtual replicas of herself throughout the metaverse as part of the introduction of her CY-B3LLA line of NFTs.
