The 2022 World Cup is coming up and Qatar as the chosen destination has become a very controversial topic recently. Qatar is a small country located in the Middle East. Due to some restrictions implemented by the government, the decision was very debatable among football fans around the world.
The Qatar government has been implementing some restrictions for the tourists that are planning to visit the country during the World Cup. Due to the country’s religion, many limitations needed to be implied and this has peeved tourists. This modern world that we live in with this new generation infringes some of their beliefs and led to the creation of those restrictions. Also, the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, the fans are all into it by bringing different cultures into Qatar . It is an event that brings people from all over the world together, thus, since most people from other countries have different beliefs than the ones in Qatar, the governments felt it was needed to implement rules.
In Qatar, the dominate religion is Islam which is considered to be a very “strict” religion.. Therefore , the Qatar government has decided to implement restrictions during the event required to be followed by all attending the event. In case those restrictions are infringed, then the person would suffer serious consequences such as fines or even imprisonment . Some of those restrictions went viral on social media because people thought they didn’t fit modern beliefs and practices. One of the most viral news was about drinking alcohol in stadiums and public places. The religion Islam does not accept drinking alcohol and many tourists were dissastisfied with this rule. Aspart of many countries’ cultures to have some drinks during the games, people have shown their dissatisfaction in social media.
The government has regulated those restrictions, recently, due to the negative response of the people. Many people even attacked the entity, FIFA, for picking Qatar as the host of the event . Many disagreed with the idea of the World Cup being in Qatar and said that they should move it to another country with western principles. As we know, they can’t simply change the destination in the last year of the event, since the place is chosen 8 years before the event. In response to all the comments in social media, FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino said that the place is confirmed and Qatar is working hard on bringing the best event possible for every football fan, while still keeping their loyalty towards their religion. The event is also very important for the country’s economic situation because of the huge amount of tourists it attracts.
Although the fans have highly rejected the restrictions implemented by the government, there is nothing to do about it. The Islam people are very loyal to their religion and follow it very properly according to its beliefs. However, FIFA is doing their best to make it the best event for everyone even with all the restrictions implemented.
