World Cup Album Domination

World Cup stickers are very famous around the whole world. For football fans, completing the album is something very special and everyone works really hard to complete it. As the World Cup gets closer, the more viral the album becomes.

The first album was released in 1970 by an Italian company, founded by Giuseppe Panini, called Panini, after signing a contract with FIFA. In that year Brazil won the World Cup, leading to their second title in history. Brazil’s team contained many historical players, such as Pele, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino and so on. The album format was very different at that time, it only consisted of the players and the emblem of each team. Now the album has special stickers, such as the stadiums, a picture of every champion since the first edition, and an image of the cup. The first albums are very rare and I personally have never seen one.

This year’s new edition came with some stickers called extra. The packets would come with 6 stickers instead of 5 and they are considered really rare by the collectors. Those extra stickers are players that are in the album, but they can either come as bronze, silver and gold. Since they are considered very rare, their market value is extremely high. For example, there are people selling Neymar’s gold sticker for more than R$9,000. Each packet of 5 stickers is costing R$4 , which is very expensive compared to the other edition. In 2010 each packet would cost approximately R$0.75 , in 2014 R$1.0 and in 2018 R$2.00. The rising in the price has highly affected the selling of the album, people are giving up the idea of completing it because they can’t afford it. An approximation was made and each person would have to spend almost R$600  in order to complete the album, that is without getting any repeated sticker.

The stickers are very popular among kids and teenagers as well. Since the objective of the album is to complete it, people need to trade their cards in order to complete everything without having to spend hundreds of money. Schools are starting to regulate their concerns about the trading of stickers because they have been disturbing many classes. EAC is one example, they have warned the teachers to make sure no one is trading stickers during classes.
