The Oscar was streamed this March 27th, with the famous and gracious awards being given to various films and the event that shocked the entire world. Will Smith, the famous actor that won the Best Actor in Leading role Oscar this year was the center of attention, but not because of his movie.
The awards this year had a large variation as last year with the main categories having “Coda” as the best picture, Will Smith as Richard in “King Richards” for best actor. For best actress Jessica Chastain won for playing as Tammy Faye in “The Eye of Tammy Faye”. While all these movies and actors earned their Oscars, it was extremely curious that the best picture movie, Coda, actually wasn’t even nominated for the best actor and actress categories, being nominated to only three categories in total, Writing, Best picture and actor in supporting role.
Besides the best actors and movie, there was another big event in the Oscars, the Chris Rock and Will Smith scene. During the Oscars, Chris Rock, a famous comedian, was about to present when he made a joke regarding Gi Jane’s main actor, who was bald, connecting her to Jada Smith, Will Smith’s wife who doesn’t have a long hair due to Alopecia Areata that is a disease that causes hair loss. Jada Smith did not find the joke humorous at all, nor did Will Smith who then went onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face. The crowd started laughing believing it was all a sketch and planned before, but once Will Smith sat down and Said the Phrase “Keep my wife’s name out your f****** mouth”.
This led to many discussions after the scene, regarding whether Will Smith was wrong, or Chris Rock was wrong. The great majority saw it as two wrongs, where Chris shouldn’t have made such a joke when talking about Jada’s disease, but Will was also wrong when going up onto the stage and hitting a man because he felt offended in front of the whole world. After all the scandal Will Smith has resigned his position in the Academy, now not being allowed to vote anymore, however may still win further Oscars in the future.
In conclusion the Oscars this year were filled with surprises and unexpected events, both in the winning movies/actors and in the conflicts not related to the Oscars. Will Smith and Chris Rock were both seen as wrong in the whole situation, leading to apologies from both sides. Jada Smith, the target of the Joke admitted her husband had overreacted to the joke. After theories accusing the whole scene of being staged and Will Smith leaving the academy, the whole situation was over and opinions had been formed.
