The series Corvos, created by interviewee Giuliano Marini, was made with the aim of having a hero who, as the writer and director of the series Rafael Santin described in EPTV’s “Em Cena”: “When [Giuliano Marini’s] story came to us, I thought of a script that could put this hero in our society; Considering the moment that our society is living right now this chaos, violence, and impunity comes the emergence of a character like this in our world. It is a character that ends up emerging from the delay we have of justice in Brazil”.* (Quote translated from Portuguese).

He explains how in the country of Brazil there is a lot of crime, but nobody is there to solve it, and it is like that that the hero in Corvos is formed. The pilot for the series is being filmed in places like the Vila Industrial or in the Estação Cultura, here in Campinas.

The hero’s costume was designed and manufactured by Giuliano, the interviewee. He also had the idea for the story of this hero, and he is giving it his all to make it the next hit on Brazilian television. Giuliano is a fanatic of superhero comics, so much so that he decided to put his creativity into one made by himself. Learn more about the mind behind the series with Giuliano’s interview below. Please note that the interview is all translated from Portuguese.

Q: At what point and how did you get inspiration for the series?

A: In fact, the character has been in my mind for (believe it or not) over 20 years. Since then, the history that surrounds it has gone through several changes and processes until it ends up in what we will see in the series. Note that this is an anti-hero, armed and dangerous and idealized 20 years ago so that in itself is interesting. Young people will soon have the opportunity to watch a kind of “time capsule” that came straight from someone’s imagination.

Q: How was the process of making the hero’s costume?

A: It was hard work but very rewarding. It’s one thing for you to imagine the hero, another thing to draw him, and an even bigger thing is to dress someone just like what you imagined. It’s an incredible feeling. The mask turned out even better than I imagined thanks to the excellent work of the 3D modeler Felipe Wolf and the painting by specialist Bruno Reuther.

Q: What are some of the turbulences that you are encountering during the process of making this series?

A: I believe that producers, Lú Chagas and Director Rafael Santin, could answer that better. But I believe that the biggest turbulence was to build something that in no way loses to high-caliber productions with a super low investment. When watching the Corvos pilot keep in mind that everything that will be seen there was achieved thanks to the dedication and hard work of the team. Only the money invested would not have been enough to deliver this truly incredible work. There are a lot of things in the pilot that will be first-timers for Brazilian television.

Q: Is there any preview of when and where the pilot of Corvos will be launched?

A: The optimistic forecast is September 2022, but anything can happen.

Q: What are your best-case scenarios for the release of the series? Would you prefer it to be broadcasted on public TV or in a streaming platform like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO max, etc.?

A: We are targeting streaming platforms. Corvos needs about 5 uninterrupted hours to be told in a nutshell. So a series is ideal. And the best way to broadcast a series is on streaming platforms.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to let the people reading this know about the series and what is coming from it, or about the process of making Corvos a reality?

A: The plan is to finalize the pilot to have it as a kind of curriculum to show potential investors what we are talking about. The pilot of Corvos is signed with the excellence of photography by Iziel Miranda, the direction and revolutionary adapted screenplay by Rafael Santin, and the unparalleled competence of Producer Lú Chagas. Therefore, once watching the pilot and hearing what the complete work is about, the investor will clearly understand that he will not be able to pass up this opportunity. Haha.

Q: How is the funding of the series arranged? A project like this must be difficult to financially support.

A: This answer can get giant and revealing. Haha. So I’ll try to contain myself. I guarantee you: Corvos is coming to revolutionize the way Brazilians make cinema. And while the viewer is still stunned by the visuals, sound, etc… little does he know that he is about to witness a story that is innovative and has been maturing for 20 years “inside the bottle”. I’m a suspect to speak but as a “Velho Boca Suja” I can tell you: It turned out great.  Corvos brings an anti-hero with both solved and unsolved dilemmas. The series instantly invites you to participate in these dilemmas. The idea is to mess with the audience’s head so prepare to be surprised and expect the unexpected. Thank you for the opportunity and the interview!
