Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion at first glance may look like just another shōnen anime, but its deep exploration of human ambition and the conflict of ideals shows that Code Geass is one of the best shows ever made. The story follows the narrative of Lelouch vi Britannia, an exiled prince of the Holy Britannian Empire, who, after acquiring the power of Geass, the “power of absolute obedience,” sets on his journey to destroy Brittania and free its colonies from the tyrannic rule of Emperor Charles zi Britannia. To accomplish his goals, he needs to juggle between being a student at Ashford Academy and Zero, the leader of the rebellion, but this is the least of his problems because he also needs to confront his greatest opponent, his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi, who believes that destroying Britannia is wrong and that Lelouch should try to change it from the inside.
What makes Code Geass such a great show is the character of Lelouch because, throughout the story, viewers are able to accompany every moment of his life, the lows and highs, which makes them understand what makes Lelouch be Lelouch. Although Lelouch may seem like a flawless protagonist at first or the mastermind who is always ten steps ahead of his competition, he never loses the qualities that make him human. In the show, viewers are able to see his struggles and how each loss profoundly affects him and culminates in shaping his ideals at the end of the show, which is the true beauty of Code Geass.
