Detective Conan, also known as Case Closed outside Japan, is one of the most popular manga and anime of all time, with the manga selling over 250 million copies as of 2021. The series is written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama and follows the story of Shinichi Kudo, a high school detective who, after being force-fed the drug APTX 4869, has his body turned into that of a first-grader. To protect his identity, he takes up the alias Conan Edogawa and works together with the FBI, CIA, MI6, and PSB to expose the crimes of the Black Organization in hopes to acquire an antidote to turn himself back into a teen.
What makes Detective Conan so popular is the care that the author puts into every mystery. He does extensive research to make the cases as realistic as possible and even pulls off the tricks himself in real life to ensure the realism of the cases. Aside from the APTX 4869 drug, all elements in detective Conan have some degree of realism to them, which makes the show very special. Another great selling point is the characters as the author is able to make them all incredibly smart and cool, which is really hard to pull off since Gosho Aoyama also needs to come up with plans that feel natural and not forced, a problem a lot of series have. Overall, Detective Conan is a great watch or read and anyone from any age group should appreciate the work of this great author.
