Why you should NOT play Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Everyone and their grandmothers know Pokémon, but despite being the highest-grossing media franchise in the world with a total revenue of 109 billion, the games have had a clear decline in quality and care over the years. In 2019, the games Pokémon Sword & Shield (SWSH) made fans think that the franchise had finally hit rock bottom, but the new entry in the series, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (BDSP), released in November 2021, showed the world that they still could fall deeper.

For context, Pokémon BDSP are the long-awaited remakes of the games Pokémon Diamond & Pearl (DP), and since 2013 I’ve seen thousands of fans begging for the remakes of these beloved games. However, Pokémon, when developing the new games, made the worst decisions imaginable. According to the developers, they wanted to make these games as “faithful” as possible, nothing more than a cheap excuse to cut corners. Although they did deliver it in one aspect, the glitches, because they went even beyond by adding even more game-breaking glitches, making it possible to finish the game in under 15 minutes.

Another glaring issue is the models and animations, which have been the same for nearly 9 years, and the new chibi model for the characters look absolutely terrible, with no facial expressions whatsoever. Finally, the icing on the cake is the 60 dollar price tag, and even though this is standard pricing for Nintendo and they know they can get away with it, this price is still a bit excessive for a glitchy remake of a 2007 game. In conclusion, buying Pokémon BDSP is a complete waste of money. If you want to play a Pokémon game situated in the Sinnoh region, you should go for Pokémon Legends Arceus or Pokémon Platinum because both do a much better job at fleshing out the rich lore of this region.
