For many years, journalism has been a common interest between EAC students and teachers. In fact, during the late 90s, teacher Chris Kuczynsky taught the first elective of Journalism at EAC.
In this elective, students published magazines, called “The Non-Sequitor”, which included topics related to school, about once a month. These magazines were filled with satirical articles written by students that brought up subjects from “How to win a Science Fair” to “New heartthrob at EAC”. However, the magazine faded away as students turned their interests to other electives.
Once again last year, during the pandemic, seniors attempted to write a series of articles and publish them on the school’s APP. Nevertheless, the students were too overloaded with other subjects to continue writing their essays and the articles too ended up fading away.
At the end of last semester, a group of students reached out to director, Mauricio Gozzi, requesting for a journalism class. Moreover, teacher Daniel Pires, who has a master degree in scientific journalism, was invited to teach this new elective for 9th, 10th and 11th graders. Promptly, Daniel accepted the invite and started working on this new course.
Fortunately, with the guidance of teacher Daniel Pires, students in the journalism elective have class time to write their articles and do the research necessary. With his assistance, students have the freedom to write and create their own articles according to their personal interests and skills.
Since classes have begun, students have been working on the creation of the newspaper’s website (where all articles will be published). We’ve discussed aspects such as what the sections will be about, the name of the newspaper and its logo. Furthermore, our team decided that articles will be written in English and published on the website.
Finally, after two weeks of work, the newspaper received the name of “EAC press” and was organized into seven sections.
In the upcoming weeks, the website will receive interesting articles about different subjects such as the science fair, national and international colleges and students who got scholarships in colleges because of sports.
Our journalism team is working to create a reliable and interesting newspaper for the school. Stay tuned to the website to catch up on the most recent posts!
